Douglas Valley 1964
Above is a section of a 1964 map showing Douglas Valley from Douglas (bottom) to Douglas Water (top right) - click on map to open enlargement
Apart from the obvious differences at first glance such as the A70 / A74 road junction layout, the Happendon Camp and the unblighted landscape from surface open cast mineral workings, when you look closer you can see a range of important differences. You are immediately drawn to how green our valley once was, with the large amount of forrestry up and down the valley, which is sadly now disappearing; areas of water, some gone, some yet to appear in future floods, and are still present today; housing and industry have also changed...more houses...obviously, but also more industry, in particular the factories on Angus Avenue, Douglas had not been built then. Sadly they are now either demolished, derelict or in decline.
