just to add my congratulations to the folk who do this site. it was a good buzz to come across it and see lots of names from the past. i was born in the cottage hospital in 1960 and left in 1971. it was a great place as a kid and ive been back a few times to visit, im only 20 miles away but its a different world and when i go back its a weird sensation, but nobody can take the memories away! thanks again

Visiting my ancestors
My girlfriend and I visited Douglas today. Morton's are a sept of the Clan Douglas and it was really great to visit a bit of the history. St Bride's is amazing inside and I found a couple of Morton's in the graveyard and war memorials. My girlfriend is Polish and it was amazing to see the Polish connection to the village as well. Lovely place :o)

The Glespin
I lived in the Glespin from 1967 until 1984. My Mum was Maimie and my big brother was Andy, then there was Sheila, myself and Arthur. We lived at 24 Hillview Crescent. Sadly Mum died in 2004 and Andy died very suddenly last November. Have been trying to contact a few people, Margaret Mitchell (who I know lives in Rigside), Kay Scanlon, Heather Ramage, Joan Borthwick, Ross Lindsay and Ian and Stephen Potter - any info would be great, thanks

Mainshill
Can i just say that the camp for mainshill is the best idea yet. Its about time scottish coal got it into them they are not welcome in the Douglas Valley, even if its on a coal basin.

Can i congratulate all involved in the camp and that its shows that there is some people about caring for our environment and other land based issues.

So what if it makes jobs, but look at the other old opencasts round about, look at the state of them when they have been left.

Come on Lord Home and scottish coal think of the bigger, brighter and cleaner picture of the environment and people of the valley

adam, some of your stuff i agree with.but dont you think the tax payer is the looser hear?and i take it that you would like it better if no one had a job to go to, so that we all have to scrounge off the state just like them at the mainshill camp.

Adam, thank you for your kind words. The continued support of local communities is what keeps us at the camp at it, and keeps the pressure up on Scottish Coal and Lord Home.

Stuart, yes you are right - as always, it is the tax payer and ordinary people who loose out. Communities lose their health, local environment and democratic say, while the bosses, rich land owners and politicians profit and benefit. But if you think that local jobs are created through these projects, please look closer, as an opencast at Mainshill will result in a net loss of local jobs. This has already been seen with the recent lay-offs at Poniel and Broken Cross mines.

And please, before stereotyping us as scroungers, visit the camp and talk to us. I think you'll find that we are a very active and caring bunch, who have given up salaries and a warm house to do something positive for the community.

Mr Stewart. I do have a full time job, they guys at the camps are topclass. Not scroungers. I think its sad people want this to go ahead. Maybe the tax payers are loosers but if you back the mainshill camp and go join the protest in person maybe the like of his lordship and his cleek will listen to the villagers and stop this from happening any more.

Here we go again. An extension. What do Scottish Coal think there playing at. This is a joke could they not have thought to finish off Glentaggart before they started to put out plans for Mainshill. This is going to please the likes of J Stewart and Mrs Rankin. But I am sure that the gang from the camp will be there in force.
